Today I want to talk about misinformation in pagan and metaphysical spaces. In this time of fast internet and near instant information travel, it’s easy to pass along any old thing as real information, and gods know people do it all the time. Sometimes unintentionally, but sometimes it’s done with absolute intent, usually to make money, or push some sort of agenda.
How do we sort out what’s what, especially in a field that leans so heavily into the intuitive and intangible? A lot of it is what can be considered common sense, honestly.
One of the biggest tips I can give, honestly, is to check the source. If it’s someone you’re not familiar with, do a quick search on them. You can learn a lot this way.
I’m going to use myself as an example. My social media footprint is small (I’m working on that! lol), and if I were questioning some of the ideas I talk about, I’d remain skeptical. I’d want to delve further into things to see where she (I) is getting information.
I know it sounds like I’m literally telling you not to trust me, but I’m actually telling you not to blindly trust what you read online. Even if it’s someone who’s built trust with you – if they say something that sounds outlandish, or like a bit of bullshit, look into it.
That leads me to my next tip for sorting things out- Reach out. Ask the poster, the tweeter, whatever, if they’ve got sources you can go to, to look into the subject yourself. Or ask them how they got there. They may tell you it’s not their job to teach you, and when talking about race, gender, or sexuality issues that’s absolutely true. In spiritual and metaphysical realms, though, in my opinion, if we’re using social media to talk about these ideas, that’s a declaration of willingness to discuss, if not to actively teach.
There are going to be lots of times when people talking about things they’ve seen in dreams, or read via divination, and you have to use your own intuition in deciding how you feel about it.
This is what I’m trying to learn how to balance, myself, right now. The knowledge of things that I’ve seen and experienced where I can talk about the what, but I have no concrete evidence of the why is an interesting area.
I want to build a community where we can accept and talk about supernatural things, mystical experiences, AND all the possible (and sometimes proven) science behind them. I also want us to be able to freely and comfortably call out harmful snake-oil salesfolk.
That’s my end goal. 🙂
